Question

I'm hitting a paywall for an article in a magazine or newspaper. How can I get the full text?

Answer

Answer

Search Nexis Uni to see if we have full text access to an article using the tips below:

Step 1: Log into Nexis Uni from USU Libraries

  1. From the USU Libraries homepage, go to Articles & Databases.

  2. To access Nexis Uni from our A-Z database list, enter "nexis" or click "N". You may need to enter your A-number and password.

Step 2: Use the byline command to search by author name

  1. In Nexis Uni, use the search command byline(name) to search by author. You may put the author's name in quotation marks to narrow your search. The example in the image below uses byline("walt hunter"). Click Search.
  2. If needed, refine the search results using options on the left of the results. To filter by date, use Timeline. To filter by publication title, use Source Name. You can also use the search bar at the top to modify your search terms.

Optional: Search by article title or publication name

You can also search by article title or publication in a similar way. You may also try quotation marks to find exact matches or combine searches using AND.

  • Use title(name) to search by article title
  • Use publication(name) to search by publication.

For example, the search below uses title(artemis II) AND publication(Axios).

Additional Information

Why use Nexis Uni?

USU Libraries provides access to many news and magazine articles through our subscription databases. Some well-known magazines and newspapers, like The Atlantic, Forbes, or Financial Times, may only be available to us through the Nexis Uni database.

Why use byline to search if I know the article title?

Publications sometimes use different titles for print and online versions of the same article. Searching by author name or byline and checking the publication date is a good way to find the article you want, even if it has a different name.

I tried this, and I still can't find the article. What can I do?

Some articles may not be available because of publisher licensing limits. For example, sometimes content is not available through databases for 6 months or 1 year after publication.

There may be other access options available for what you need. USU Librarians are happy to help! Reach out to us on Chat or Library.Help@usu.edu.
